Jets boss Branko Culina is eager to find a "quality" overseas striker ahead of the new campaign and is set to trial several options with Zuma given a week to impress.

Zuma, 34, hasn't played for South Africa since 2008, but had an impressive international career having captained his country during 67 caps for Bafana Bafana.

The striker-winger, who finished last season with Danish Superliga club FC Nordsjaelland, also had successful spells at club level earlier in his career at FC Kobenhavn in Denmark and Arminia Bielefeld in Germany.

Despite his age Culina believes the South African, who trained with the Jets on Friday, looks in good shape.

"He looks in very, very good nick, by the way," Culina told the Newcastle Herald. "You get a 34-, 35-year-old and sometimes they're on their last legs.

"But I looked at him and thought he looked very lean and thin, which is a good sign, because those type of players last a little bit longer.

"The question is has he lost any of that skill that he obviously had to get to the level he has played at?"

Newcastle are also expecting two more trialists this week, one from China, the other from South Africa. It seems likely one of the three trialists will be offered a deal.

Culina added: "All three of those will be looked at and given until next Sunday, before we go on our break.

"I think that's enough. We'll decide if any of the three are good enough."

The Jets also have international pair Johnny Alcaraz (USA) and Marcello Fiorentini (Italy) on trial, along with local duo David D'Apuzzo and Chris Price.

Newcastle have three spots left available on their roster ahead of the 2010/2011 Hyundai A-League season.
