NEWCASTLE coach Gary van Egmond felt his side let Perth back into the contest through a lack of hard work during the second half.
The Jets were leading 2-1 at Members Equity Stadium when Glory skipper Jamie Coyne was given his marching orders on the hour, receiving a straight red for a foul on Newcastle's Jin-Hyung Song in a collision that also involved Perth striker Eugene Dadi.
But going a man down seemed to galvanise Glory into taking control of possession, the hosts dominating general play as Newcastle's Daniel Piorkowski attempted to block Scott Bulloch on the left sideline, his crunching tackle earning him an early shower as well.
But, despite both sides being back to all square on 10 players apiece, it wasn't enough to energise the Jets, who managed just one scoring opportunity in the final half hour as Glory earned a share of the points through Dadi's injury-time penalty.
"We were actually better when they had 11," van Egmond said after the match.
"When they went back to 10, it became a case where other players felt that someone else was going to do the job and we stopped working.
"The first half, I thought we played some good football, kept it very well, people were moving into space, moving and making decent angles and we did really well.
"And then once they went down to 10, we obviously, we didn't start to do that and to compound that we get a player sent off."
Van Egmond was still happy with the spirit his players showed during the first half as they took a 2-1 lead into half-time, goals to Joel Griffiths and Tarek Elrich more than cancelling out Nikita Rukavytsya's strike for Perth.
He said that after a difficult week for the club, which saw homesick striker Edmundo Zura leave the squad to return to Ecuador, along with skipper Jade North signing for North Queensland Fury next season, the players showed real character and hardness at the ball during the opening exchanges.
And the Jets coach knows more of that 'backs to the wall' mentality will be needed over the next 10 weeks if the seventh-placed club is to defend its Hyundai A-League crown from last season.
"We've really got to fight and we know there's still a lot of quality as we saw in the game today, how well in parts we knocked the ball around," van Egmond said.
"So, we look forward to playing Wellington in two weeks, to have more troops come back and working our way up the ladder."
