Smeltz's transfer to Turkish Super League club Genclerbirligi was finally signed off this week sealing the deal, but Gold Coast United have filled the void by bringing Djite back from Turkey in his place.
Djite joins Miron Bleiberg’s men after a two-year spell at Genclerbirligi and has signed on at the Gold Coast until the end of the season.
Prior to his move overseas, Djite spent two seasons with Adelaide United in the Hyundai A-League where he netted 11 goals in 32 appearances.
Capped nine times for the Qantas Socceroos, the 23-year-old also won the Hyundai A-League Young Player of the Year award in 2007/08 while with Adelaide United.
Djite today said he was excited about settling in on the Gold Coast and will look to a number of his former club and national team colleagues to help him bed in as quickly as possible.
“I played with Kristian Rees, Scott Higgins, Michael Thwaite a couple of times I've been in Socceroos camp, and Jason Culina and a couple of other boys,” Djite said.
“I think for me, what's most important is to find a place then settle down as quickly as possible, and get everything set up. Once I'm settled off the field it's much easier to be settled on the field especially with coming into a new team with new teammates.
“I can’t wait to get started and to try and help the team as much as I can.”
Djite also said he was eager to forge an understanding with United skipper Jason Culina, who will be working closely with the striker in the attacking half of the pitch.
“I think he can only help my game develop with his guidance and leadership. I'm sure he's going to have a lot of tips for me,” he said.
A strong, powerful striker who can hold the ball up, 183cm Djite will not only be looking to score goals himself, but help to share them around the team as United’s speedy youngsters like James Brown, Tahj Minniecon and Golgol Mebrahtu benefit from his physical presence.
“Together I’m sure we can do some good things. Obviously with an experienced player like Joel Porter and the youngsters that Gold Coast have, I'm confident we can link up well and begin to forge some good attacking partnerships,” he said.
Djite is also keen to get started with the man who brought him to the Gold Coast, Head Coach Miron Bleiberg, saying he is looking develop even further as a player under his watchful eye.
“I've heard a lot of positive things about Miron and if he wasn't a very good coach I wouldn't have come here because in terms of my development it's important to be guided by good coaches,” he said.
“I’m really looking forward to working with him and working into his system. I'll give my best in every game, and hopefully do the job that Miron and the other boys expect of me.
“The experience of being overseas and playing against some of the players over there has been very valuable and now I hope to use what I have learned.
“Now it's a matter of getting back into the rhythm of training, gaining some match fitness and from there I can get into some good form and hopefully start scoring some goals for Gold Coast United.”
