Wheelhouse has been linked with a move to Melbourne Heart after he fell out with the Jets over the terms of a new deal at Hunter Stadium.

But today he left the club, vowing to take time out from the game to consider his future.

Jets today confirmed they would not now be re-signing their skipper - who handed the captain's armband to team-mate Ruben Zadkovich while injured - for next season.

On hearing the news, Wheelhouse told the club he wanted to leave immediately.

A club statement said: "He decided it would be in the best interest of both parties to stand down for the balance of the 2012/13 season."

Today Wheelhouse added: “It goes without saying that I am disappointed I won’t be at the Jets anymore.

“Over the last six to 12 months my head hasn’t been it in like it should be, and this will now give me a chance to get away and plan my future.

“There is no point being at a place when my heart isn’t in it and the last thing I want to do is let down my teammates.”

The Jets admitted they had hoped to persuade Wheelhouse to see out the rest of the season but said they respected his desire to exit straight away.

“This hasn’t been an easy process and we hoped Jobe would play out the remainder of the season,” CEO Robbie Middleby said.

“We have worked through this process to ensure the best outcome for Jobe’s future, which is why we have agreed to his request.

“We thank Jobe for his contribution to the Club and wish him all the best in the future.”

Wheelhouse will take some time out from football to decide on his future.

“I felt this was the best decision for me and I appreciate the club supporting my decision,” Wheelhouse added.

“I haven’t ruled out playing in the future, I just need time to sort out what I want to do. I am good mates with all of the boys and I wish them only the best for the future.

“Hopefully they will make the six and go deep into the finals this year.”
