It was unclear whether Skoko would continue at the club following the end of last season, despite the fact that he has established himself as a first-team regular. Wigan boss Chris Hutchings has declared he is impressed by Skoko however, giving the 31-year-old praise on the club’s website.

"Skokes proved himself to be a really valuable member of the team last season,” he said.

"He's a quality player, who's equally strong on either foot, and is an excellent passer of the ball.

"Skokes had offers from elsewhere and I know that he was tempted to try his hand at another club.

"But he said he felt very settled at Wigan and that he would always be treated fairly here, which pleases me a lot. I'm delighted he has chosen to stay with us, really delighted."

Skoko is expected to retire from the national team, and is likely to use the Socceroos match against Argentina on September 11 as his farewell match.
