The club today said they were in the final stages of discussion with the Socceroo veteran after having reportedly set a series of ultimatums to Kewell's camp to prompt a decision.

The club had hoped to announce a decision earlier this month but the deal appeared to have gone cold after Kewell took his family to the US and then on to Dubai where they were this week.

Speculation rose this week when Victory were said to have told Kewell and his personal manager Bernie Mandic that they wanted an answer by close of business on Thursday.

That was then extended until midnight, then on until 9am Friday and is now believed to have been extended again until Monday.

Kewell is also said to have had interest from a Russian club while Sydney FC are also still in contract talks with the 32-year old former Galatasaray, Liverpool and Leeds United star.

Today the club issued an statement insisting a decision would be announced soon without giving a hint of whether they would be unveiling Kewell in blue and white for next season.

"In relation to media reports surrounding the deadline, Melbourne Victory Football Club can confirm that it is in the final stages of discussions with Harry Kewell and his management," it said.

"We expect to be in a position to announce an outcome shortly."
