EXCLUSIVE: Former PSV and Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman is eyeing a move to the A-League and is open to offers for his services.
The 32-year-old striker, who scored more than 100 goals for Dutch side PSV in just over 120 games before moving to Chelsea in 2004, has confirmed his interest in a career in the A-League.
Despite limited opportunities at Chelsea, Kezman has scored steadily since leaving London in 2005, including spells at Atletico Madrid, Fenerbahce, Paris Saint-Germain, Zenit Saint Petersburg and most recently South China. Kezman also boasts a good international scoring pedigree, notching 19 goals in 49 appearances for Serbia between 2000 and 2006.
“Kezman is the perfect marquee player for the A League,” James Hardy, the player agent representing Kezman in Australia, exclusively told au.fourfourtwo.com. “He has scored over 238 goals in 470 games in Europe's top leagues, a record that speaks for itself.
"Because of the sound performances of the Australian national team over the last few years, Australian football in general is slowly gaining credibility. It is not going to be easy [to get Kezman to Australia], he has interest from all over the world, however if we can bring him here the benefits for Australian football would be astronomical.”
Kezman still has a lot of offer, insisted Hardy, unlikely “other marquee players who come to Australia for the sun, beach and women, Kezman wants to come to score goals and help put the A-League on world stage".
Hardy added that he only has a short time frame to put a deal together for Kezman in Australia.
Sydney FC are likely to have first refusal on Kezman, but several other A-League clubs could be interested. Newcastle Jets with owner Nathan Tinkler’s money and Bridges’ retirement could move in, while Melbourne Heart, plus a Perth side now without Robbie Fowler or a Gold Coast side short of strikers, are all possible destinations.
