The news followed several days of speculation about the 40-year-old's future after a disappointing end to the season that saw the Istanbul giants finish fifth in the league and drop out of the UEFA Cup in the first knockout round.

"Galatasaray Sports Club has announced that Bulent Korkmaz has resigned as head coach of Galatasaray Professional Football Team and that his resignation is formally accepted by the board of directors," the club said in a statement.

"In view of our good relationship, we would like to thank Mr Korkmaz for his services and wish him all the success in his future career."

Korkmaz, who spent his entire playing career with Galatasaray, took the job in February as the replacement for German coach Michael Skibbe.

Recently departed Real Madrid coach Juande Ramos and Dutchman Co Adriaanse have both been linked with the now vacant position in recent days.
