MANUEL Lapuente, the Mexico coach during the 1998 World Cup, believes appointing Sven-Goran Eriksson as current boss was a mistake.
Lapuente believes the 'Tri' are in danger of failing to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa because Eriksson has little knowledge of Mexican football.
"If you ask me about his suitability, I think it is a risk, a huge risk," said Lapuente, now coach of Tigres.
"Eriksson is a great coach. He has won many trophies but the truth is he doesn't know the footballing environment in Mexico and doesn't even know the qualification system.
"We have to be very careful."
Mexico made it through to the third phase of qualifying and face Canada, Jamaica and Honduras in their group.
