SYDNEY FC boss Vitezslav Lavicka has brushed aside the issue of a top spot tussle with Gold Coast United and insists it is simply a case of one game at a time.
Lavicka was happy with the point picked up in the 0-0 draw at Central Coast Mariners and had expected the hosts would be tough to break down.
"It was a tough game, we expected that because the home team play very well in defence," he said. "We tried to build up in attack and when we lost the ball in the middle third we opened up space for our opponents."
He denied that the team's style of play against The Mariners showed that they had run out of options.
"We played some long balls and some build up in attack, but we made mistakes and we'll look at that in the game analysis."
Lavicka politely refused to be drawn into speculation on whether Sydney based on current form could challenge Gold Coast United for the top spot, saying every match was important. Despite Sydney's poor away form last season, he said he was not focusing specifically on winning away games.
"We concentrate on the next game, home or away it's no different. Today we focused on the Central Coast game and next week it's Wellington," he said. " Every game is tough but we have a target to be successful every game. We respect all teams but we want to be successful."
While his coach thanked Clint Bolton for his 'birthday present to the team', a last minute penalty save against Adam Kwasnik, Bolton was even happier with his second save denying Dylan Macallister in the game's final seconds.
"I was pretty happy with the second one. It would have been disappointing to save the penalty and then concede right at the end. We'll feel disappointed that we didn't pick up three points but we're going to have to come up against this style of defensive football. People are going to get numbers behind the ball. We'll go back to the video and find ways to break teams down," said the Sydney keeper.
