The Jets twice came from behind to secure a 3-3 draw away to Melbourne Heart on Saturday, with Ryan Griffiths' 87th-minute penalty salvaging a point for the visitors.

While Newcastle are fourth on the table, they have conceded an alarming 16 goals in eight matches - 11 more than league leaders Adelaide United.

"Performance wise I think this game pretty well sums us up our season," van Egmond told reporters following the Heart comeback.

"We've had some poor performances within the year and then we've done some really good things. We're pretty inconsistent.

"The one thing for sure is that there's no way known we're going to be serious title challengers while we concede the amount of goals that we're conceding and that's definitely something that we have to rectify.

"When you come away against a team like Melbourne Heart and you score three goals and you still don't win the game - it's never going to be sustainable."

Van Egmond said it was unlikely the Jets would look to bolster their playing stocks in the January transfer window.

"We've made a pretty decent pact on what we have right at this moment, and the young ones that we've brought in to develop them," he added.

"There's going to be times when we play them and times when we're not going to play them. But we're pretty committed to these kids coming through."

Van Egmond said he was delighted with the result after Newcastle battled back from both 2-0 and 3-2 down at AAMI Park.

"I think Heart went into their shell a little bit and tried to protect the lead, and that was probably the worst thing they did as well," he said.

The Jets will face a significant test of their championship credentials against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium next week.
