EXCLUSIVE: Danny Vukovic's goalkeeping mentor says he must learn to bite his lip to prevent future flash points with officials.
Central Coast Mariners goalkeeping coach John Crawley has already sat down with the youngster to express the importance of not being distracted and involving himself in arguments which only lead to a loss of concentration and focus.
It seems to be a case of goalkeepers needing to keep their heads while those all around are losing theirs.
Crawley told au.fourfourtwo.com: "Before all this (grand final/olympic drama) happened it’s something I said to Danny we’d have to manage.
"I give him the scenario where it’s the last minute of the game, there’s a free-kick and people aren’t sure exactly what they’re job is in that situation, there’s fatigue as well.
"You can’t go and complain to a referee or a linesman, which he sometimes does."
He added: "It comes with the responsibility of the role of the goalkeeper. You can’t afford to do anything like that (get involved with officials).
"Because you are the last line of the defence you have to get everyone else organised. You have to organise and fix things. Sometimes that means biting your lip and not getting involved.
"You have to maintain your coolness, be cool, calm and collected and get on with the game. I think that’s just a part of learning."
Crawley is confident Vukovic will learn and that added cool will come with experience.
He said: "The boy’s only 22 years of age. We’ve asked a lot of him since he was 18 or 19 and he’s passed with flying colours.
"The next few years will really see a mental maturity develop and he’ll be in a much better position and I’m looking forward to seeing that."
