STRIKER Ante Milicic has been released by Queensland Roar to play in the Malaysian Premier League with club side Shahzan Muda FC.
Milicic has had limited playing opportunities this season and will leave for Malaysia this evening (Saturday), ready for the start of the Malaysian season on December 17.
“It wasn’t quite happening for me at Queensland Roar this season but these things happen in football," said Milicic.
"When you look at the system the team plays and take my age into consideration, plus the progress of the young players here, my chances of playing are somewhat limited.”
He continued: “I’ve got a chance of going somewhere I’ve been before and I’ve a good relationship with the people over there (in Malaysia).
"This opportunity came out of the blue and whilst I would have liked to have achieved more than I have here in Queensland, that’s the way football works sometimes.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time here; not just with the football side of things, but also living in Queensland and the way this club is run. The facilities and organisation were great to be a part of.
“I just hope that the boys can go on with the season and be successful. I’d be the happiest guy to see them go on and take out the title and win the Grand Final.”
After farewelling his team-mates at this morning’s training session, Milicic reserved a special mention for the Roar backroom staff and coaches.
He added: “I couldn’t leave without publicly thanking all the people I’ve worked with here, but especially the coaches and physio Tony Ganter.
"Frank (Farina) and Rado (Vidosic) are a different class. The way they have transformed the club in the last 12 months shows how special they are.”
Queensland Roar FC Chief Executive, Lawrence Oudendyk, thanked the 33-year-old for his service to the club and wished him well for the future.
“Ante Milicic has been a model professional for our club and has always maintained a positive outlook," he said.
"We sincerely wish him all the very best for the future and hope he has a successful time in Malaysia.
“Throughout his time here he has shown outstanding leadership qualities and has been instrumental in developing and mentoring our younger players.”
Coach Frank Farina echoed the CEO’s sentiments.
“Ante is a great pro’ and a great lad; one of the best you will meet in football," added Farina.
"He loves playing the game and hopefully this move will be a good one for him and he will get plenty of game time.
“He’s been brilliant ever since I came to the club and was fantastic in the dressing room. We wish him well and hope he’s successful over there; I’m sure he will be.”
