CENTRAL Coast coach Graham Arnold said his team used the two-week ban handed to Patricio Perez for simulation as motivation for the Mariners' 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory in Gosford on Friday.
A shattered Perez was forced to watch from the stands at Bluetongue Stadium after being suspended for two matches following an incident in last week's 1-1 draw with Sydney at the Sydney Football Stadium.
Arnold said his team turned in a "siege mentality performance'' after what he said was a tough week for the club.
"It was a great performance, I'm very happy,'' he said.
"It's been a tough week. This is a close group and Patricio is close to group, the boys dug deep for him tonight.''
While the Mariners have played well for periods in earlier matches, Arnold said Friday night's effort was the club's first 90-minute performance of the season.
He said a real emphasis for the Mariners this year was being strong at home.
"The home form hasn't been great over the last couple of years,'' he said.
"We need to keep getting points at home.''
Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick admitted his team lacked the killer instinct in front of goal.
"We played some terrific football,'' Merrick said.
"We created plenty of chances and didn't pull the trigger. That's something we need to work on.''
