MELBOURNE Heart defender Matt Thompson admitted his second half mistake cost the red and whites the game against Perth Glory as the club face up to their second loss of the season.
To see all the excitement among the fans...
Thompson, 29, cut a forlorn figure after the final whistle following his side’s 2-1 loss to Glory at AAMI Park on Sunday.
It was the Heart star’s turnover in possession on 67 minutes which let in Shane Smeltz, and the Glory hitman took his chance to bury a brilliant winner – his second of the night.
After Heart’s opening round 3-2 loss in Newcastle, it’s been a disappointing start to the new campaign for John Van’t Schip’s men.
But Thompson, signed last season from Newcastle Jets, wasn’t hiding - and told reporters it was his fault the possession was turned over cheaply which resulted in the decisive goal of the game.
“We lost the game because I stuffed up, as simple as that,” he admitted.
At that stage of the game, with the score at 1-1, Thompson felt Heart could’ve got something out of the game.
“We didn’t play the way we want to play. We normally like to play out from the back but tonight we sort of bypassed that and sort of had to play a different game,' he said.
Thompson said he wanted Heart players to “back themselves” and suggested that loss to the Jets may have contributed to a fear factor creeping in.
The four times capped Socceroo was known as an attacking, goal-scoring midfielder who could also play as an attacking right back during his five years at in the Hunter.
But suggestions the Sydneysider is not accustomed to playing in central defence were played down by the former Socceroo who said centrehalf was the position he was playing right now.
He added: “It’s where it best suits the team ...I’m learning every game but tonight wasn’t because of not playing stopper enough, it was just an error in itself.”
