The first piece of 2007 silverware was up for grabs when defending champions Perth Soccer Club tackled ECU Joondalup for the prestigious McInerney Ford Night Series premier title.
Over 1,000 people flocked to E&D Litis Stadium to watch the premier and first division bouts, which are proving a favourite amongst the WA football community and in a first for the sport in Western Australia the games were broadcast live on radio station 90.5FM.
In their second consecutive final, Perth Soccer Club defeated ECU Joondalup 4-0 under lights to secure the premiership.
Graham Normanton’s Perth side tallied 19 goals throughout the duration of the tournament including a 2-0 semi-final triumph over Floreat Athena.
Perth Soccer Club is no stranger to finals success having previously won the illustrious title in 1989, 1990, 92, 98, 2001, 02, 04 and 06.
Joondalup’s road to the final included a five-game undefeated run which included a semi-final 3-1 upset to Soccer Pools Cup Champions, Stirling Lions.
In the First Division final played at 5pm, an in-form Ashfield, who defeated Murdoch University 3-0 to advance to the final, defeated Bayswater City 3-1.
“What a great way to end the McInerney Ford Night Series. Two fantastic, hard fought and entertaining games full of goals and excitement,” said Garry Chandler, CEO Football West.
“I’m sure the large crowd here tonight enjoyed the experience in what was a great showcase for our sport. Congratulations to Perth Soccer Club and Ashfield on their respective victories and to ECU Joondalup and Bayswater City on making it an enjoyable evening,” Chandler said.
The Smarter than Smoking Women’s Final, held at Coker Park, saw over 200 people witness Sutherlands Park defeat Curtin University (3-1) to secure the Social title, whilst East Fremantle defeated last year’s home and away premiers, Queens Park (3-2) in extra time for the women’s premier title.
The home and away season commences on Saturday April 14.
