Dugdale sinks Wanneroo

Stirling Lions 2 v Wanneroo City 1

A goal 15 minutes from time by David Dugdale earned Stirling Lions a hard fought 2-1 victory against Wanneroo City at Alfred Skeet Oval on Friday night.

Wanneroo started brightly and Ahmed Hafez played in Derek Cooke in the opening minutes, but Phil Straker was out quick to save, and Hafez tested the Lions keeper from a free kick moments later.

But the Lions then settled and Michael Pugliese sent Dugdale clear down the right, and his cross was met by Leo Harman, whose header was well saved by Kevin Miller, but three minutes later the lions had the lead. They hit the Roos on a quick counter-attack, and Ludovic Boi’s cross from the right was headed home powerfully by Keith Brown.

It was a little unfortunate for the Roos who had had the best of the chances early, but the Lions were now dominating. Boi went close again on 20 minutes but his first time shot was well saved by Miller. Then Okwy Diamondstar sent Daniel Micevski clear, but Miller produced another good save to deny the Lions playmaker.

The game was now end-to-end, and Roos David Houston intelligently played Cooke in on goal, but Straker saved, and for the Lions Micevski great run ended with a curling shot which Miller superbly tipped away. Just before the break the Roos were unlucky not to level, Houston, who was causing the Lions defence problems, snap shot cannoned back off the base of the post and was cleared.

The Roos made a great start to the second half and they were level inside two minutes. Houston was impeded, and the quickly taken free kick found Hafez on the right and his cross was headed home by Morgan Dendle. Again the game was end-to-end with chances falling to Stuart Hartman, Cooke and Houston for the Roos and Micevski, Diamondstar and Boi for the Lions.

But the deciding goal came in the 75th minute Dugdale was found in space in side the area and he fired home from close-range. To their credit the Roos pushed for the equalizer, Hafez beat two defenders but his weak shot was saved low by Straker. But with the Roos chasing the game the Lions also went close, Diamondstar fired wide when well placed and Miller produced a stunning double save to deny first Diamondstar and secondly from Tom Jones.

ECU too strong for Spirit

ECU Joondalup 4 Fremantle Spirit 1

ECU Joondalup thrashed Premier League new boys Fremantle on Friday night at the ECU sports ground. The 4-1 score line flattered the group A leaders who were kept in their own territory for extended periods of the second half.

ECU defender Mark Lee was pleased with the outcome and had a positive view towards the rest of the Night Series. "I don't think 4-1 was a true reflection of the game," he said. "But that (winning the Night Series) would be great. Obviously it's a pre-season competition but it would be good to get a trophy in before the league even starts."

The home side took the lead inside two minutes when Lee's pinpoint cross from the left found big striker Ian McMurray at the near post. The Blues piled on the pressure looking for a second goal but were caught on the break by Roberto Colalillo. The Fremantle forward latched onto a chip from midfield and guided his volley past the keeper before the half hour mark to level the contest.

ECU, however, regained the lead and control of the game before half time thanks to another goal set up by Lee. The defender's low free kick was smashed home by Anthony Jones at the near post.

The second half began as a battle for ascendancy, with neither side creating enough chances to take it early.

ECU sealed the win with ten minutes to go thanks to the boot of Jamie Gibb. Again Lee's cross found McMurray in the box and a goalmouth scramble saw the ball fall to Gibb who sent the keeper the wrong way. McMurray finished the match with his second goal just before the final whistle, again scoring at the near post.

Next week ECU travels to Alfred Skeet Oval to take on Armadale while Fremantle has the week off.

Athena thrash Inglewood

Floreat Athena 5 v Inglewood United 0

Liberian born striker Boima Karpeh led Floreat Athena to an emphatic 5-0 victory over Inglewood United in the McInerney Ford Night Series at Litis Stadium.

Karpeh, a reported target for Perth Glory, put in an outstanding performance, scoring two goals and causing problems for the Inglewood backline throughout the game.

Despite Inglewood’s early domination, Floreat were the first on the scoreboard through Stefan Smiljanic, who tapped in after a desperate goalmouth scramble in the 22nd minute. From that point on Floreat dominated the match. Karpeh scored twice in the space of two minutes, starting in the 33rd when he skipped past two defenders and calmly slotted the ball past Inglewood ‘keeper Oliver Taseski. Two minutes later he scored in a very similar fashion, putting Floreat firmly in control. One minute before half time Floreat increased their tally to four when Paul Vatistas scored a simple goal after the ball was cleared off the line twice.

The second half took a while to get going but Vatistas was able to wrap up the emphatic win for Floreat with his 2nd goal, another simple tap-in, in the 59th minute.

The explosive and dangerous Karpeh still hopes he can break into the Perth Glory set-up with continued good performances. “My ambition is to show the people at Perth Glory what I can do,” he said. “For whatever reason last year I didn’t make it but if I keep working hard and playing well I can make it at the next level.”

Knights get a helping hand from Swans

Swan IC 0 v Western Knights 3

Western Knights were given a helping hand in their 3-0 victory against Swan IC in the Night Series clash at the ECU University.

The Swans had begun brightly and Anthony McStea’s cross was headed goal wards by Aaron Cole, but Ramic saved easily. The Knights settled and they were ahead in their first attack on 10 minutes. Luka Jukic’s free kick caused panic in the Swans defence and the ball deflected towards goal off a Swans defender, and Daniel Trim blasted home from close-range.

The Swans almost equalized moments later, Danyal Bennett cut in from the right but Ramic tipped away his shot low at full stretch. But the Knights doubled their lead in the 21st minute, Andrija Jukic fed the overlapping Paul Cooke down the right, and his cross deflected off Bennett and flew into the net.

The Swans continued to push forward looking to get back into the game and David Foster’s bullet like header was brilliantly turned away by Ramic on the half-hour, and Trim was sent clear for the Knights and Daniel Agudelo came out to save well.

The Knights wrapped up the game in the opening minute of the second half, when McStea fouled Andrija Jukic in the area and Troy Miller-Hayes pointed to the spot, Stuart Montgomery sending Agudelo the wrong way from the spot-kick. Both sides had chances to add to the score line, Montgomery firing inches wide and Trim’s snap-shot was saved low by Agudelo for the Knights. While Foster headed inches past the post and David Perich’s shot was saved low by Ramic for the Swans.
