THE issue of A-League expansion is giving Lawrie McKinna a major headache and the Central Coast Mariners boss is desperate for a decision from the FFA.
While the Gold Coast Galaxy and North Queensland Thunder wait to learn their respective fates, it seems those already present at the A-League party aren’t sleeping too well either.
McKinna has had a topsy turvy couple of weeks with the ongoing Danny Vukovic affair, the departure of John Aloisi and the boost of Ahmad Elrich’s capture.
The dust has barely settled on last season but already plans are being put in place for next year – or at least they should be.
Not knowing when season four will start is proving a pain when it comes to putting together schedules for pre-season trips and training sessions.
As it stands, the admission of one or either of the new franchises would probably see an earlier start to the A-League. McKinna just hopes a final decision is reached soon.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com: “It’s a nightmare to be honest.
"We’re hoping to get away for a trip and getting back to full training in May. But you need to know how and when things are scheduled to happen. Obviously we have the Pre-Season Cup and there are other games you like to organise.
“It’s very difficult to put everything into place when you’re not sure when the season will start and who you are playing against.”
But whether the Galaxy and/or the Thunder are admitted to the A-League this year or next, McKinna is among those embracing expansion.
He said: “We need to play more games, simple as that. Getting two more teams in would push us in the right direction, taking the season to 27 matches. Hopefully, it will be sorted out.”
