The 29-year-old Londoner took to Twitter to announce his decision: “Sad to be leaving Perth glory had a great time with the boys and the fans but it had to be done”.

The towering striker, who has played in Scotland and Turkey, joined Glory in in September 2011 and scored a total of 10 goals in 42 appearances for the club.

Mehmet’s departure will free up Glory’s roster with the club recently courting the likes of Aussie star Harry Kewell and international football celebrity David Beckham.

Glory have struggled for goals in the current A-League season despite having plenty of quality in the attacking third with Mehmet and former Golden Boot winner Shane Smeltz on the roster.

The club currently sits fifth on the A-League ladder but has the lowest goal haul of any side in the league with just 14 from 14 games.

The club today confirmed they had released Mehmet to allow him to move.

"Perth Glory have terminated the contract of Billy Mehmet by mutual consent after the striker requested a move to Bangkok Glass FC in Thailand, subject to all documentation being finalised," the club said in a statement today.

"Perth Glory coach Ian Ferguson said he nor the club will stand in the way of any player who wishes to further their career overseas."

Mehmet has played for five professional clubs in his senior career but spent his most prolific period with St Mirren in the Scottish Premier League between 2005-2010 where he helped the club stave off relegation.
