HEART Chairman Peter Sidwell says the Melbourne derby has now become an iconic part of the city’s sporting culture like the AFL’s Anzac Day match.
Friday night’s much anticipated clash between city rivals Heart and Victory has captured the imagination with widespread media coverage of the game in Melbourne.
And with tickets are selling fast the fifth derby in the two clubs' history is likely to be a sellout at AAMI Park.
Speaking today at the announcement of the re-signing of a quartet of Heart youngsters, Sidwell said the derby was fast becoming A-League folklore.
“I think it’s almost that now,” he said when asked whether it was the best home and away A-League fixture.
“I have no doubt this event will become iconic in this town going forward. And it will be just like the Anzac Day clash between Collingwood and Essendon.
“It will be emblematic of the game and everyone’s interest. It’s going to have that moment going forward.
“I think from that point of view, both of teams are doing this town a service and the game a service and we both respect the opportunity we’re given to have it," he said.
“It’s a fantastic honour to fill a stadium, to have two teams at the stage they are in growth and to have the rivalry that it is, it’s a pretty fantastic thing.”
The AFL’s Anzac Day clash is a big part of the code's calendar with massive crowds turning up for the annual blockbuster on the public holiday.
In Heart team news, the players to re-sign on one and two year contracts were Brendan Hamill, Aziz Behich, Jason Hoffman and Eli Babalj.
The team trained at AAMI Park today ahead of Friday night’s game between two sides in very good form.
Victory’s 3-1 home win over Phoenix last weekend offered a glimpse of how good Mehmet Durakkovic’s side can be with the firepower at their disposal.
Heart on the other hand have zoomed up the table and are now eying a top two spot after three consecutive victories including last weekend’s win on the road in Perth.
Sidwell added the mood in the Heart camp was one of determination.
“It’s clear it holds a special piece of folklore every time you win one and we’re not shrinking away from winning Friday night.
“It would continue our momentum, we’re building up, but so are Victory.”
