EXCLUSIVE: Melbourne Victory midfielder Billy Celeski has warned time is running out for a finals run and says the next few days will be critical for Victory’s top six aspirations.
Victory meet strugglers Gold Coast United on Wednesday night at Launceston’s Aurora Stadium.
Jim Magilton’s men then head back on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s Melbourne derby against wounded Heart.
The matches offer six vital points in the next few days with just seven games left after Saturday’s blockbuster.
And with Victory four points adrift of sixth spot, albeit with a game in hand, Celeski said it’s time for Victory to finally put a run together to secure that all-important place in the play-offs.
“There are no excuses. We’re desperate for three points on Wednesday night,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com on Monday.
“It’s a massive game. I think sixth spot is starting to climb away from us a little bit. So we need to stay in touch and we need to get that momentum.”
Celeski will miss Wednesday’s game due to injury but is expected to be challenging for a first team spot again in two weeks time.
A win in Tasmania would close the gap on sixth spot to just one point. That, said Celeski, might just be the momentum builder the club desperately needs as the season draws to a close.
“The derby is on the weekend so three points here would get our tails up and set ourselves up because there aren’t that many games left and we need to get into that six,” he said.
Star Victory marquee Harry Kewell is a major draw card for a game that is tipped to attract around 8-10,000 fans, depending on the weather.
“It’s great for H turning out in Tasmania. I don’t think he’s ever been to Tassie,” said Celeski.
In fact, it’s believed Kewell played in the Apple Isle in a trial match for the Joeys some 15 years ago.
And for a ball-player like Kewell, the Aurora surface will suit him nicely.
A selection of Victory and Gold Coast players were on hand to see the pitch on Monday evening, and gave the surface the thumbs up.
“We’re lucky, we’ve played here a few times in pre-season and looking at the pitch now, it’s in great nick. It’s immaculate and nice and green,” said Celeski.
The players also took part in a community clinic on the pitch with about 70 youngsters from the local junior association.
Meanwhile, the 26-year-old Macedonian born Socceroo (capped once for the Green and Gold) said Victory’s puzzling fade-outs this season are more mental than physical.
“It’s very frustrating for me and all the players," he added. "We play so well in the first half. There’s a lot of energy and a buzz about us, and we seem to score first but there seems a bit of a fade-out.
“It’s a mental thing. It’s not a physical thing – you’d certainly like to think so, so deep in the season. Little lapses, we concede and the shoulders go down more than physically being unfit.
"It’s something we need to fix.”
