Hugo Sanchez's side were playing their final warm-up game before their CONCACAF Gold Cup gets under way on June 8 against Cuba.

A low-key first-half saw few chances for either side, a long range shot by Pavel Pardo well and a strike from Ramon Morales the only efforts of note for the home side but both were well saved Paraguayan keeper Justo Villarain.

The visitors only threatened sporadically and Mexico keeper Oswaldo Sanchez denied Dante Lopez before Edgar Barreto saw a long-range shot fly just wide.

Sanchez brought on striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco, midfielder Nery Castillo and forward Francisco Fonseca at the break to try and give his side more of an attacking edge.

But the goal arrived at the opposite end as 75th-minute substitute Cardozo bagged a late winner after being set-up by Nelson Cuevas to silence the noisy Azteca crowd.

After facing Cuba on Friday, Mexico will come up against Honduras and Panama in the group stage of the Gold Cup, while Paraguay take on Bolivia for the Copa Paz del Chaco in Santa Cruz de la Sierra on June 19 before embarking on their Copa America campaign.
