The Mexico Football Federation have submitted their application to host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022.
Mexico has hosted the event twice before, in 1970 and 1986, and the governing body believes the country will benefit from staging it again.
FMF general secretary Decio De Maria said: "We have sent the application form to be in the process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
"With this we begin a long process in which Mexico raise their hands to organise our third World Cup.
"Mexico has got a name in the football world as we have organised two before. We have an efficient FA and we will be hosts of the 2010 Under-17 World Cup.
"Mexico has some of the best supporters in the world, maybe just after Brazil. Putting our candidacy on the table will generate the improvement of the stadiums, the building of new ones and generate infrastructure."
