EXCLUSIVE: Lawrie McKinna is hoping tonight's attendance at the Sydney Football Stadium will back up his hunch that midweek fixtures are worth keeping.
Whether it was the 'Fowler factor' or the attraction of a Queensland derby, last week's midweek clash at Suncorp Stadium resulted in a surge at the turnstiles.
McKinna admits he will be interested to know the attendance for this evening's clash at the SFS and thinks there should more where practical.
"Midweek football is played all over the world and I know there are issues but I think it's something that should be looked at. I know the players enjoy it," McKinna told au.fourfourtwo.com.
"I know they had a good turnout in Brisbane last week for the game against Fury. I think it's something that can work, especially at holiday time."
McKinna said midweek kick-offs would need to suit the needs of youngsters and their parents better. "I think the 8pm kick-offs in the Champions League made it difficult with school the next day so maybe 7 o'clock would be better," he said.
The Mariners boss goes into tonight's game with a goalkeeper boosted by his selection for the Socceroos squad to face Kuwait.
McKinna is delighted and feels it is a call up thoroughly merited. "Danny has been outstanding for us this season. He's bounced back bigger and better and for me, is the in-form goalkeeper in the A-League," he added.
