EXCLUSIVE: Gold Coast United fans believe former Brisbane Roar star Charlie Miller could provide a further boost to the club as it answers its wake up call.
Despite another poor turnout for last week's victory over Central Coast Mariners, fans are still optimistic at Skilled Park.
Gold Coast United Supporters club secretary Terry Hands admits there is still work to do for the club to build its fanbase and engage with the community but important steps are being made.
"I think the passion and anger (over the crowd cap crisis) was a real wake up call and to be fair there has been a response," Hands told au.fourfourtwo.com today. "The club has definitely come to the table in terms of the community stuff, the shopping centres, the schools and the like.
"There is also a Christmas barbecue coming up for the fans after they've watched the players train while we (the GCSC) are putting on a sportsman's lunch which most of the players will be at.
"That work then has to continue in the off season and build for a big start to next season. But I think there is a sense that we are moving forward."
Hands joked that a sense of normality had returned due to the stick from rival fans.
"There was that sense of solidarity from other fans during that period, for which we were very grateful. Now it's back to just giving stick to Gold Coast. That's fine. We like some banter," he said.
A big topic of conversation among the Gold Coast supporters is the potential acquisition of ex Roar man Miller.
"I think there are differing views on the forums about this but I think the majority would be happy to see him (Miller) here. Personally, I think he is a bit of a character and you need that. He would also be another player to settle down the midfield," he said.
Then there is the issue of rivalry.
He added: "Having Charlie would add even more spice to the rivalry that we have building with Roar.
"I'm not sure what the (rules) situation is in terms of being able to get him but you'd hope that would certainly be a factor in terms of the Boxing Day turnout. It would be fantastic to break 10,000, the magic figure if you like."
Miller was due to begin training with Miron Bleiberg's team today as the club explored whether there was any possibility of signing him as a guest player.
The rules prevent players switching from one A-League side to another in such a capacity but United are arguing that Miller is a free agent and the question of restraint of trade could be an issue here.
If no immediate solution can be found United could sign Miller as an injury replacement in January or land him permanently if they free up a visa spot in their squad.
