EXCLUSIVE Mark Milligan has been cleared to make his debut at Central Coast Mariners tomorrow with Gary van Egmond adamant that any stick from the Bluetongue faithful should be taken as a big compliment.
The Newcastle Jets boss has confirmed to au.fourfourtwo.com today that the Olyroos skipper has been given the necessary clearance to play by the FFA and he won't hesitate in pitching him in.
While the travelling Jets fans will no doubt get behind the new boy in Gosford, the reception from the home supporters might not be so generous.
Not that van Egmond is worried about that. He said: "Look, they never boo a bad player. They only boo good players to try and put them off their game because they know they can hurt you.
"If there is any stick he (Milligan) has to cope with it. It's part and parcel of football."
Milligan lacks game time but van Egmond says the only way to get match fitness is through getting out on the park.
He said: "He knows what this competition is about, we'll assess things (ahead of kick off) and we'll see.
"We've obviously got several boys away on international duty and we don't have everyone to choose from."
While Milligan's initial attempt to secure an overseas move didn't work out as he'd hoped van Egmond insists he hasn't signed a player who is feeling low as a result of his experiences.
He said: "Not at all. We've got ourselves a player who is full of ambition and wants to be the best he can be.
"I'm really looking forward to working with him. I think he's technically good and can perform a role in the centre of the park.
"It was very pleasing to hear him say that he hadn't felt this way (about his football) since he was a kid and that's great."
While Milligan's signature is secure on a contract, there are still question marks over several players.
Adam Griffiths has been linked with A-League new boys Gold Coast United but van Egmond is not resigned to losing anyone just yet.
He said: "We know there are suitors looking (at Griffiths) but we're still hoping that something can be worked out."
Adam's twin brother Joel looks set to return from a hamstring injury to face Central Coast tomorrow night.
