EXCLUSIVE: Miron Bleiberg pronounced his Gold Coast United as A-League season favourites but added that the Asian Cup will work in Wellington’s favour.
Speaking at today's launch of A-League season six, Bleiberg made the announcement on stage that this would be Gold Coast's year.
And he later told au.fourfourtwo.com that the title chase would be affected by a number of factors with potential call-ups for the Socceroos at next January's Asian Cup one key element.
"Listen, I'm the leader of the team. I have to show confidence. Imagine if I say, 'I think we're going to lose'? he told au.fourfourtwo.com.
"I believe it. If you notice we didn't make many changes because I trust my team."
But Bleiberg explained that if the title didn't go to the Glitter Strip, Ricki Herbert's Wellington were well-placed for a title charge.
"Obviously the Australian teams have more exposure to national teams - U/20s, Olyroos and Socceroos - than Wellington," he said.
"Especially when you are working on a shoestring of 23 players for a 30-game season in a short period of time - we play it over seven months.
"On top of that if you are affected by fixtures from the representative teams - which we all proud to contribute - but in the end of the day Wellington will have some advantage.
"And it's not only my opinion."
Wellington's squad has been boosted by the addition of defender Jade North who, with Andrew Durante, are two potential Socceroo call-ups next January.
Phoenix start with the bye while Gold Coast face their Queensland rival Brisbane Roar this weekend as the A-League week one kicks off.
