EXCLUSIVE: Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg says his championship winning youth team will be important as he looks to finish in the A-League top two next season.
Bleiberg is officially on holiday while also taking a coaching course in Sydney. But despite not currently doing media, he kindly agreed to talk to au.fourfourtwo.com at Saturday night's NSW Premier League game between Marconi and Sydney United at Bossley Park.
Firstly Miron, upon reflection, your thoughts on Gold Coast's season?
I can tell you it depend on if you look at full half or the empty half. If you look at the full half, I think if you finish third in your first year is a credit and we gave them run for their money and everything was good. And as Mr Lowy told me at the awards night, he said you should be happy because if you win everything in first year, the only way is down. So I take his advice, he's a smart man but if you look at the empty half, two rounds before the end of the season we are equal points with Melbourne and Sydney are two points behind and they have to play against each other in the last round. So logic prevails statistically, mathematically, if you have knowledge of gambling, you should go to top two. So that's the empty glass, it's a bitter taste but it's forgotten and you look at next year and try to do better next year before you ask me...
So that's my next question...
It's to finish in the top two and go one step better in the finals. So that's what we have to aim for. Life is very simple ... it's the media who make it complicated.
Will Jason Culina and Shane Smeltz be back next season?
Why not? Smeltz also has a contract but we operate in an open market and if both of them will get offers to go.... We have the philosophy with Clive that we want everybody to play for the Gold Coast 110% and be part of what we want to achieve. But we live in a reality you know, if tomorrow Jason gets an offer from Manchester United or Smeltzy an offer from Chelsea, they will go. So until the first round of the season I can't tell you and when the season starts, every game is a new option. You know what I mean?
What about your championship winning youth team? Any thoughts on building the club around some of these guys some of whom have broken into the Young Socceroos?
There will be around seven or eight players from this youth team... look five players from this youth team trained with us all year. A permanent fixture in the first team. There will be a few more that will start to train with us next year and in October the market is open and I've got room for one more U21 player so one will be lucky [enough] to get a contract with us this year and the rest will be lucky [enough] to get contract for following season. We may be try to do what Sir Alex Ferguson did at Manchester United what he did with the Beckham generation and build a side ...
What brings you to tonight's west Sydney derby?
Honestly, I'm happy not to be on the news. I'm on holiday. I'm here not to look at any player. Honestly. Well now I'm here I am, but we came here for the A-League coaching licence and we had a night off. Like Vidmar, to coach in Asia, you need that licence. You can always learn something but I was forced [to take the course].
Who's impressed you tonight?
Number 26 for Marconi [Nahuel Arrarte]. He's the one that caught my eye.
And how was your holiday?
I was in New Zealand, we did trekking and kayaking. But the best part was there was no mobile or Internet!
