DAVE Mitchell praised Tando Velaphi's response to recent criticism and hailed his performance in the 1-0 triumph over Adelaide United at ME Bank Stadium as 'outstanding'.
Velaphi was the hero for Glory as he repelled a sharpshooting Reds outfit determined to continue their recent dominance over Perth. Velaphi pulled off a number of fantastic saves while at the other end it was enterprising Dutchman Victor Sikora who scored the winner.
'It was great to keep a clean sheet. Tando was outstanding tonight, some of his saves were top drawer and it reinforced just how good he is," said Dave Mitchell.
"There has been some pressure on him from outside the club this season but we know his quality and I thought he was outstanding, it's a credit to him.
"He has played plenty of good games for club but tonight was probably the best. He made some wonderful saves against a flood of attempts from Adelaide particularly towards the end of the game. He was the difference tonight."
The match was passionate affair from the opening whistle with no one taking a backward step in a bid to secure the three points. Glory stand-in skipper Chris Coyne said he was delighted with the performance and enjoyed the physical encounter.
"They got in our faces but we weren't going to let them come to our patch and dictate," Coyne said.
"It was physical, but it's a man's game and as long as there are no malicious tackles and it's good, honest footballers going for the ball then no problem.
"We looked at each other at half time and said let's not get rolled over by a team that think we're soft and I think we upped the tempo in the second half and it was as good as we got.
"You get to go back in to the change rooms after the match and be proud of what you've achieved."
The coach was delighted with the winning goal from Victor Sikora.
"Adelaide has been hitting a bit of form and they're a good side. You can see they can cause a lot of problems.
'We had a couple of chances earlier on and we could have been a couple of goals up. It was important to keep things coming our way so we made some changes and built momentum and it was a fantastic goal that we scored.
"I'm just pleased for the players, we deserved it, we worked ever so hard and I think they showed a lot of character tonight which got us through," added boss Mitchell.
