The Glory ended their Melbourne hoodoo, having never won in Victoria in the A-League, with the win courtesy of goals from Jamie Harnwell and Mile Sterjovski.

After the game, Mitchell said: "I think Melbourne are one of the best sides in the league, no doubt. It was going to be a tough task for us and the boys executed it brilliantly. We worked on a lot of things this week and it paid off."

He continued: "This year we've studied about how we're going to play, there's a few scenarios we can adapt and we've got more depth than we've had. That's what you need to be a championship winning team.

"With the games this year - there's going to be a lot of games in a short space of time - you have to have depth in your squad.

"I think this season what we've got is more depth. When I first took over the club it was very difficult to bring good players to the club and we've worked, worked and worked on that and the good thing is we've got players now who've got a lot of credentials."

The Glory boss, though, refused to get carried away with the victory at AAMI Park, acknowledging his side had their rub of the green.

He added: "Melbourne got in behind us a couple of times and had that been a goal or so than we'd have been in trouble.

"Sometimes you ride your luck in the game and you make your own luck.

"They didn't score, we defended well and hit them on the break and exploited a few things we thought we could do against them."

Mitchell also reserved praise for under-fire goalkeeper Tando Velaphi who impressed in the victory.

"Last week Tando got hammered by so many media and I think he was outstanding tonight.

"He showed the true-class player he is and he'd been focused all week and he was outstanding, as well as a lot of the players were, but particularly Tando for some of the saves he made and the nerve he held."

Mitchell also lavished praise on club stalwart Harnwell, who scored the game's opening goal.

"Jamie stands up week-in week-out, leads by example and tonight scores a goal, Johnny-on-the-spot.

"He epitomises Perth Glory, he loves the club, he's part of the club and a lot of people keep writing him off.

"The good thing about Jamie is you've got the asset where you can use him up front or behind.

"He'll always pop up to score because defenders don't like playing against him because he gives his heart and soul.

Mitchell added: "It was a tough task tonight and the boys implemented it well. We've got a tough game next week against Newcastle, they're a good side, the A-League is not an easy league."
