ROAR skipper Craig Moore has been ruled out of Friday night’s clash with Newcastle Jets at Suncorp Stadium at the last moment.
Moore had to be withdrawn from last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Sydney FC with a calf injury and has been nursed through training all week.
The Roar captain underwent scans yesterday and was given the all-clear, but despite showing improvement in the last 48 hours he failed to complete this morning’s training session and will not be risked against the jets.
Coach Frank Farina was pragmatic about the loss of his skipper, saying that he believed in the players who were in line to replace him.
“Craig is a big loss but that’s life and we move on. We’ve got options; Josh McCloughan, Benny Griffin; so we’re not short of cover. We’ll obviously miss Craig’s experience, but we’ve got cover, there’s no doubt about that,” he said.
“Every team has been in similar situations to us throughout the year where you’re losing players for whatever reason.
"We’ve been reasonably lucky of late in that we haven’t lost many players apart from suspensions, but this is where your depth is tested and I certainly believe that of the 22-man roster I’ve got any one of them can step into the team.”
Also out is young flyer Michael Zullo who is likely to be missing for several weeks with a thigh injury. Zullo will have an MRI scan tomorrow (Friday) to determine the extent of the injury before the Roar medical staff plan his recovery program.
Danny Tiatto returns to the starting line-up after coming on as a substitute last week but his role has not yet been decided by the Roar boss who is tinkering with the idea of pushing the former Socceroo into a more advanced role, rather than his usual spot in defence or holding midfield job.
Currently in outright second place on the Hyundai A-League ladder, Queensland have never beaten the Jets on home turf and will have to be aware of the attacking threat of Joel Griffiths who has been a thorn in the side of many other teams in this campaign.
Farina said: “He’s (Griffiths) a big danger, there’s no doubt about that, but he’s certainly not the only one. Joel is a good player as is Musialik and North who’s a rock at the back for them, so they’ve got a solid side and it’s going to be difficult.
“We talked about the fact that we’ve never beaten them at home and it’s something we’re very aware of. The last three times they’ve played us at home, they’ve beaten us and last season it was quite convincingly, so let’s hope fourth time lucky.”
