EXCLUSIVE Newcastle Jets keeper Neil Young says his operation yesterday was a success and the brave glovesman is on track to resume training in six weeks time.
Young has endured a wretched 2010 but is looking forward to a brighter future after doctors told him he was "basically dead" following complications from surgery to fix a broken nose earlier this year.
Young was booted in the face by Shane Smeltz in an A-League game against Gold Coast United last January, resulting in a nasty cut to his nose that seeped blood on the pitch.
It was confirmed Young had broken his nose but an antibiotic taken following the incident affected the 30-year-old West Australian's internal organs and doctors had to remove his large intestine.
Young subsequently spent eight weeks in intensive care where he lost 22kg after his body stopped producing white blood cells.
Now though, Young is eyeing a return after Monday's successful operation and is believed to be looking at the end of August as his comeback date.
In the meantime, Newcastle has signed 34-year-old former Fury, Leicester City and Northern Sprit keeper Paul Henderson for cover as short-term replacement alongside Ben Kennedy.
Meanwhile, the Jets' trial match against Central Coast this Thursday morning has been canned due to the state of the pitch at Budgewoi.
Branko Culina's men head to Port Macquarie around two hours north of Newcastle for this weekend's friendly with Brisbane Roar.
Roar are expecting new striker Jean Carlo Solorzano to arrive later this week so this weekend looms as a potential debut for the Costa Rican striker, who signed a one-year loan from Costa Rican club LD Alajuelense.
The Jets also have a trial planned against NSW Premier League club Rockdale City on Wednesday July 28.
