EXCLUSIVE: Sasho Petrovski wasted no time haunting his old club and now he's hungry to make life miserable for defenders in the Asian Champions League.
To see today's trial match...
In sweltering conditions at Budgewoi Soccer Club today, Petrovski netted the only goal of the game midway through the second half against Central Coast Mariners - his employer until a couple of weeks ago.
He raced through to plant a shot into the left hand corner of the net as the Jets and Mariners continued their preparations for the Asian Champions League.
The experienced striker was delighted to see the ball hit the back of the net: He said: "It was good. The main thing was to keep a clean sheet and we did that. Luckily for me I was on the end of things and that one goal was the difference.
"There's a lot of new guys come in here (at the Jets) and it's important we play these games and gel quickly. We don't have time to waste as we're going into the ACL and we have to get results where they count.
"Things are looking good and we've ticked a lot of boxes. I can't wait for the ACL. It will be a massive test for us and a good stage for Australian football to show where we're at."
The match also saw a first outing for Jets new boy Nikolai Topor-Stanley who only arrived at his new club yesterday following trials in Europe.
Jets coach Gary van Egmond told au.fourfourtwo.com: "It wasn't really about the result. It was more to ensure that the boys had a decent hit out against good opposition.
"Due to the weather conditions, it wasn't the most upbeat game. The conditions took it out of the boys but all in all, relatively happy.
"We played with a 4-3-3 in the first half and then changed to 3-4-3 in the second half. We've got that flexibility within the group now to change systems and everyone knows their jobs reasonably well.
"It's the second game in a row where we've kept someone to zero and so I'm happy with that as well.
"The new players have come in and given the group a real lift. There's a good mentality and a good feeling among the group and that's also important.
"I thought Nikolai (Topor-Stanley) was excellent. He's very agile for such a big guy. He gets good elevation, has a lovely left foot and I think he's going to be a very good acquisition."
Mariners boss Lawrie McKinna was not quite so pleased with the outcome, a match which saw him give run outs to Nick Rizzo, Shane Huke and Adam Kwasnik.
He said: "In the second half Newcastle deserved their goal. We kept giving them the ball. First half was okay, second half was poor.
"A few boys in the second half didn't do themselves any justice. These guys are pushing for spots but they're not doing themselves a favour with the way they played. It was hot but that's no excuse. Newcastle knocked the ball about reasonably well in both halves.
"Sash (Petrovski) was always going to pop up and score and he did alright. We wish him all the best for the Champions League and next season."
