Newcastle flyer Tarek Elrich is wondering when the cavalry from South America will arrive...
With some significant player losses including Nick Carle, Paul Okon and Milton Rodriguez, the Jets are re-building but Elrich believes the players need to continue moving forward.
“They’re big losses because they were key players but the boys who are filling in are doing a great job," he said today.
"We just have to get over it because they’re gone and we can’t get them back. We’ll just have to try and re-structure to make sure make the finals."
The Jets’ reported signings from South America are yet to be sighted by Elrich or his team mates but it is believed they are still on track to join the squad.
“I’ve heard of a few South Americans signing with us too but I haven’t seen any yet - nor has the coach,” he laughed.
“The only signings we’ve seen is [Scott] Tunbridge and [Adam] Griffiths and Noel Spencer.
"Apart from that we’ve heard of a few South American blokes coming, we just haven’t seen them yet.
"We’re only a few weeks away from the season so I hope we see them soon.”
Elrich has seen limited game so far in the A-League but played his first full 90 minutes against Perth recently and appeared in the Jets’ 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory on the weekend.
“We didn’t win one pre-season game [last year], and we didn’t win even one in the first seven in the season itself," he said.
"So we’ve already got our first win against Melbourne so that already helps. All the boys are confident and we’re looking good.
“The match against Perth was actually my first full 90 minutes in the A-League so it was pretty good to get that under my belt.
"I had a groin injury last season but I’ve had a good pre-season so hopefully it will pay off for me later.”
While Gary Van Egmond has made no guarantees to the speedy Young Socceroo, Elrich says his aim is to secure either the left or right wing position.
He added: “All Gary has said to me is that he felt last season I wasn’t ready to be playing in the A-League but in the off-season and so far in the pre-season I think I’ve shown I’m a better player now, and more confident.
"He’s helped me a lot and has gotten me playing the style he wants. It actually really suits my style so it’s easy.”
