A SECOND club in Melbourne is inevitable...but Victory would welcome the competition, says goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos.
There is much debate about the possibility of another franchise operating in a city which has demonstrated its love for football.
Melbourne Victory boast the biggest home gates in the A-League by some distance.
Fans have flocked in their thousands to the Telstra Dome and Theoklitos is delighted.
Speaking after a visit to see the Victorian under 13 side, the A-League's goalkeeper of the year told the Mooney Valley Leader: "I know when they first mooted the A League, they were a little bit unsure about the Melbourne club.
"But one thing you know is that if you've got the product in Melbourne, the people will support it.
"Who would have thought within three years we'd have 22,000 members?
"There's now talk of a second Melbourne side.
"They have had a five year exclusion zone, so we know it won't happen for at least another couple of years.
"I think it's inevitable as the league expands. I for one think it's a great idea."
But only last month, Victory CEO Geoff Miles told au.fourfourtwo.com: "What has been successful for the A-League has been the one city one team model brought in by FFA.
"It's a very competitive sports market in Melbourne and there's no doubt that the single club – where everyone can get behind the one team with united support – has been a key part of the league's growth.”
