JOEL Griffiths has succeeded Jade North as the new captain of Newcastle Jets and vowed to be a 'disciplined' skipper.
With North on his way to the K-League, coach Gary van Egmond has confirmed that Griffiths will take the armband.
The coach has made it clear that the role comes with heavy responsibility and that his marquee man for next season must lead by example.
Van Egmond told the Herald: "Joel has the captaincy and it is only his to lose.
"He wears his heart on his sleeve, which is good; it is just a matter of keeping it in check. He knows that. Maybe this is exactly what he needs.
"He needs to ensure he has the players on board through his attitude, his actions and the way he plays the game."
Griffiths himself is well aware of what he needs to do and is vowing to lead without completely changing his approach to the game.
He said: "I have to show leadership and that is through discipline.
"Hopefully the new role as captain will ensure I think before I act. Not just in games but at training. I will be doing my utmost to control my emotions.
"In saying that, I am definitely not going to be a yes man."
Meanwhile, the Jets have added veteran English defender and Fox Sports pundit Spencer Prior to their squad along with former Adelaide United and Sydney FC striker Dez Giraldi - both on short term deals.
