Newcastle snapped up young sensation Brown as he was off contract with troubled Gold Coast United at the end of this season.

After representing Australia in the Under 17s, Under 20s and Under 23s, Brown has had a breakthrough A-League season on the Gold Coast where he has shone after 36 Hyundai A-League appearances.

The Jets today said they were pleased to secure his signature and looked forward to welcoming him to Newcastle.

“James is a great young talent and we know he was highly sought after,” Jets CEO Robbie Middleby said.

“We are delighted he is coming to Newcastle and we can’t wait to see him in Jets colours next season.”

Coach Gary van Egmond believes Brown will suit the style of play he is implementing at the Jets.

“James is the modern day footballer and a quality player,” van Egmond said. "We look forward to having him in the squad and further developing his talent.”

The 21-year old, who was born on the NSW-Queensland border, looks forward to joining the Jets at the end of the season.

“I wish to thank Gold Coast for all they have done for me,” Brown said.

“We still have the season ahead to focus on which is what I will do, and once it is over I will look forward to moving to Newcastle and joining the Jets.”
