EXCLUSIVE: Nik Tsattalios has put his Sydney FC frustration behind him and firmly believes Gary van Egmond is the right coach to make him an even better player.
To see the rainy training session...
The 18-year-old is enjoying a fresh start with Newcastle Jets and has six months in the Asian Champions League to try and secure an A-League contract for next season.
He will always be grateful to Sydney for giving him his start in the professional game but admits to a degree of frustration at his limited game time last season.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com: "We underachieved at Sydney FC and with the squad we had we probably should have dominated the league.
"On a personal level I only played one game so limited opportunies and that was quite disappointing. I would have thought I'd proved myself better than one game.
"I know I went away a lot with the Australian under 20 team and had a few injuries but I was fit for a good eight or nine rounds in between and thereafter and I think I probably did deserve a bit more of a run, yes.
"In the end the coach picks the team. But I loved my time at Sydney apart from the limited playing opportunities. I want to thank all the experienced players, people like Tony Popovic, Steve Corica, and Robbie Middleby, it was a really good squad and I appreciate the chance the club gave me."
The youngster is looking firmly forward now and cannot wait to get stuck into the ACL.
He said: "All the boys are looking forward to the Asian Champions League campaign. It's a fresh start for me and there's a lot of other new boys as well. We're looking good in training, working hard and hopefully the preparation puts us in good stead for the ACL.
"I was coming off contract in June at Sydney and I had a call from the Jets and it worked out well. I've a six-month contract and I'll be looking to impress in the ACL and try to get a contract for the new A-League season. Hopefully I prove to Gary (van Egmond) that I can do a job in the A-League next season."
Tsattalios believes he can certainly add something to the cause while at the same time working on the aspects of his game that have room for improvement.
He said: "I like attacking down the left-hand side from deep as a left-back. I'm confident that I can create some attacking opportunities down that side and I'll run all day if I have to.
"I just have to work on my defence because I'm naturally an attacking player. I've spoken to the coaching staff and we'll look to improve on that over the next three or four months."
Tsattalios takes comfort from a recent chat with van Egmond. He said: "I've got a good vibe.
"He even said to me 'we can make something out of you'. I trust him, I think he's a good coach and from the training I've had so far I think it's going to be good for my development here."
