UNDER-FIRE Newcastle Jets keeper Ben Kennedy was all smiles yesterday after his club dismissed speculation linking them to former Socceroo keeper Mark Bosnich.
Kennedy has been singled out by coach Branko Culina as one of the weak links for the Jets in recent matches after a string of blunders helped cost the Hunter outfit vital results in their disappointing start to the season.
Culina's criticism of his side's inexperienced players - including Kennedy - this week sparked a stout defence of the young keeper by rival Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick.
And it came on the back of rumours that the Jets were close to sealing a deal with Socceroo legend Mark Bosnich to take the number one jersey at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
But the club have angrily denied the story and insisted there was not an ounce of truth in it.
Jets chairman Con Constantine and CEO John Tsatsimas were said to have been infuriated by the story for undermining their first choice keeper and knocking his confidence further.
"Ben is our goalkeeper and will continue to be," said a club insider. "We have not been in touch with Mark Bosnich and have no plans to.
"We're told the story came from a source within the club but if that's true, then they were making it up which is disappointing. There is absolutely no truth to it whatsoever."
