EXCLUSIVE: Wellington Phoenix have rubbished suggestions that Patrick Kluivert or Edgar Davids could be set for guest stints with the club.
The veteran Dutch duo have been linked recently with the A-League side and the supporters message boards are abuzz with talk but CEO Tony Pignata won’t be rolling out the welcome mat to either.
He insists the club is happy with the squad already assembled and questions the value of such guests being recruited.
Pignata believes there is no need for the A-League to bring in ageing former greats simply to generate some publicity.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com today: “No, we won’t be bringing either of those players in.
"We’re more than happy with the players we’ve got and to be honest I sometimes think you can do more harm than good (with guest players). You don’t want disruption.
"You can't use guest players in the final four rounds and they can't play in the finals either.
“I think if it’s a player who can really offer you something, like Mark Bosnich at Central Coast Mariners which is great for them, that’s fine. They needed a goalkeeper and you applaud the move.
“But I think the A-League is mature enough to stand on its own two feet now.
"There’s no need for gimmicks. Coaches are looking to build quality squads who will do a job for them over the season and beyond that.
“We are never going to be the (English) Premier League but I think this league is up there alongside the MLS and J-League. We are attracting good players and looking to push forward.”
