Phoenix jumped into fifth spot on the A-League ladder thanks to the draw with Victory at AAMI Park.

It was a match of few memorable moments and only a handful of scoring chances but the Phoenix would have been pleased with securing a point in the first match of a Melbourne double header.

Wellington created the better chances of a dour first half and Chris Greenacre could have given them the lead on 43 minutes if not for an athletic save from Michael Petkovic.

Melbourne then looked the seize the points with a more enterprising approach in the second half and Carlos Hernandez, Ricardinho and substitute Geoff Kellaway had chances to beat Danny Vukovic, but the newly signed Wellington keeper was up to the task of keeping a clean sheet.

Victory, who recorded their first home win of the season last week, advance their points total to nine points from seven games which sees them stay in fourth ahead of Saturday's trip to Townsville to play North Queensland.

Phoenix, who have eight points from their first six matches, jump past Brisbane on goals scored and have a chance to advance further up the table when they take on Melbourne Heart at the same venue on Sunday.
