Straka had opted to field a youthful Fury side, including young keeper Sebastian Usai, Jack Hingert, Panny Nikas and Adam Casey as he looks to build for the future, but their hopes of a win were all but over after 16 minutes following two early Jets' goals.

"I think we began very well for the first 12 minutes and we got a good big chance with Adam Casey and the team tried hard but two goals on target in the first half, for this team is deadly," Straka said.

"The game was over and the confidence, especially for those players which is not easy, was gone.

"Adam Casey was for a long time in the squad, Jack (Hingert) worked very well and we had (Lorenzo) Sipi on the bench - it was brilliant for them and for their experience for next season.''

Jets coach Branko Culina said he was delighted with the result in trying conditions, which ended a run of three defeats.

"We were hoping to do a bit better than that and last week in particular was disappointing but to bounce back away from home against an opposition that had no pressure on them and in difficult conditions is pleasing,'' Culina said.

"We wanted to be patient that was our tactic, we wanted to get behind the ball and conserve energy because it was very tough conditions.

"We got some confidence and was able to keep the ball better and ask questions of the opposition.''

Both sides meet again on Tuesday when Newcastle host North Queensland at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
