Although United, backed by billionaire Clive Palmer, are not expected to be admitted to the A-League until season five, the club are busy putting everything in place behind the scenes.

Okon had been linked with the former Gold Coast Galaxy franchise and has admitted that coaching does appeal to him.

Former Queensland Roar boss Miron Bleiberg will be United's first coach but he is anxious to have a young, hungry coach as his number two.

Okon's agent Leo Karis told goldcoast.com.au: "I've had initial talks with Miron Bleiberg and we discussed Paul and many other topics. Paul certainly wants to coach at some stage.

"He's keen to put something back into the game and with expansion teams coming in there are opportunities out there."

Bleiberg believes Okon, currently offering his thoughts on the game as a television pundit, has a lot to offer Australian football.

He said: "He has great pedigree and is somebody who has the respect of everybody. He would be a good addition to the club and bring a Socceroos flavour to the Gold Coast."

"Nothing is sealed yet but he is certainly high on our list of candidates. He was a great player in his could offer a lot as a coach."
