PERTH Glory coach Dave Mitchell has given a strong hint former Socceroo Hayden Foxe will not be offered a new contract with the Western Australian club.
Former Ajax and Portsmouth defender Foxe was brought to the club on a two-year deal at the start of 2007-08, but has only managed eight A-League appearances and a terrible run of injuries restricting him to just two matches this season.
Despite Foxe impressing in the matches he's played this campaign, most notably in a sterling defensive shift that saw an out-of-form Glory defeat a red-hot Sydney FC in Round 8, Mitchell suggested the club had to plan for the season ahead without him.
Mitchell indicated Glory couldn't afford a repeat of this season, where a foot injury to Foxe during the pre-season cup saw the club lose its key centreback for the first seven matches. Glory's patched-up defence subsequently conceded 20 goals in the first seven rounds.
"Pre-season he (Foxe) was great and so was David Tarka and then they both fell down injured, so that caused problems," Mitchell said.
"So, just moving forward, it's something where I've got to sit down and have a look at the picture, what players are available to bring into the club, is it better than what we've got and make an assessment and go on from there really."
After missing the first seven matches, Foxe's return to the team lasted just two games. The 31-year-old was troubled by a hamstring complaint before being forced to have a non-cancerous lump removed from his leg and the injuries saw him miss the rest of the season.
Glory are losing two centre-backs from the current squad with Nikolai Topor-Stanley heading to Newcastle and Dino Djulbic having transferred to Germany.
But with Foxe having a history of foot problems after breaking his metatarsal playing for Pompey in late 2003, Mitchell was non-committal when specifically asked whether Foxe may be kept on.
"At the minute, there's a few options we've got to take but I wouldn't like to say here what decisions we've made (about players)," Mitchell said.
"But going forward in the next couple of weeks, I'll be telling players and giving them a plan of how I think things could pan out."
Fellow defender David Tarka could be another player leaving Glory after his season was ravaged by a nerve-related quadriceps injury, although Mitchell suggested there may be a place for left-winger Nick Rizzo and Brazilian midfielder Amaral, whose season was also cut short by hamstring complaints.
