FORMER Republic of Ireland international midfielder Liam Miller has starred in Perth Glory’s 6-1 win against local Premiers Balcatta.
In a practice game played in beautiful spring weather, Miller showed all his class and why he could be one of the best additions to the Hyundai A-League.
“He was outstanding and showed his versatily,” Perth Glory coach Ian Ferguson said after the match.
“He can play number 10, holding midfielder or as an attacking midfielder. Liam also retains the balls, has a great range of passing and exceptional work rate.
“Great performance and very heart-warming but it was not only Liam.
“All the players did their job and the players who came off the bench also made an impact and that’s what you want healthy competition.”
And it was one of the younger players who made the first impact.
Starting at right midfield, Tommy Amphlett opened the scoring on 13 minutes when he slotted home a brilliant pass from Miller.
Amphlett was again in the action 7 minutes later when his excellent cross-field pass caught the Balcatta defence, allowing Mile Sterjovski to score from 10 meters.
Two-nil was quickly three when Billy Mehmet got his first goal in Perth Glory colours tapping in Amphlett’s goal-bound lob.
Balcatta pulled a goal back through an unfortunate own-goal from teenage trialist Ryan Lowry but it was only a minor setback for Perth Glory who added a fourth on 37 minutes.
Adam Hughes got his third goal of the pre-season finishing a neat one-two with Mehmet.
Mehmet got his second two minutes in the second half and Adam Taggart completed the scoring in the 85th minute but it could have been more had it not been for a phenomenal spell of goal keeping by Bobson Kamara.
Introduced on 66 minutes, Balcatta’s reserve keeper made 6 stunning saves and four in the space of two minutes.
With the Hyundai A-League season only 4 weeks away, Perth Glory’s next practice game will be on Tuesday against the United Arab Emirates Olympic U-23 team, with kick off at 882 6PR Stadium in Inglewood at 5pm.
