PERTH Glory have confirmed they are in the market for a new striker and revealed they will search far and wide for someone to replace the successful Daniel McBreen.
Speaking exclusively to au.fourfourtwo.com, Glory's Football Operations and Team Manager Ante Kovacevic revealed McBreen's impact during his brief stint at the club last season left the club in no doubt they needed a quality frontman for the new campaign.
"Daniel McBreen came in late last year with a flurry of goals. So replacing him is definitely a priority at this stage," Kovacevic said.
"The coaching staff is on that and hopefully we'll have someone on board who can repeat Daniel McBreen's performances."
During his brief stint in Perth, McBreen scored five goals in barely half a dozen appearances, before winning a call-up to the Socceroos and it seems he'll be a tough act to follow.
Kovacevic added: "Nothing guarantees you goals, but we're looking for someone who is a proven goalscorer that can come and do a similar job that Daniel McBreen did."
During the week, Perth re-signed defender-cum-centre-forward Jamie Harnwell, whilst they also have Serbian striker Branko Jelic on their books.
Kovacevic continued: "Obviously, we've still got Branko Jelic there, who had fitness issues throughout the season, so getting him prepared properly and firing will give us almost a new striker as well."
Glory owner Tony Sage told Perth radio station 6PR this week he was keeping close tabs on Mark Viduka, while there has also been speculation about a link with North Queensland's Robbie Fowler.
But Kovacevic refused to be drawn into the rumours, claiming it was all a long way off.
"It is all a bit of a pipedream at the moment, we want to think big, we'd love to have those sort of calibre of players but whether that can occur or not is mostly out of our hands at this stage," he said.
Perth, who have 20 of their 23 squad spots already filled, still have room for one more foreign player and Kovacevic admitted the club would enjoy the luxury of searching far and wide for their sought-after striker.
"Considering we need a striker, at least that won't narrow down our options to Australian boys, we can look overseas for a striker as well," he said.
