Ten-man Fenerbahce lost their place at the top of Group G after an ill-tempered goalless draw with PSV Eindhoven at the Philips Stadion.
Devoid of any real quality, the game will be best remembered for a series of skirmishes which saw PSV defender Eric Addo involved in a spitting incident in the first half.
Fenerbahce then had to make do with 10 men for the last 25 minutes as striker Deivid was harshly dismissed for a lunge on Mike Zonneveld.
PSV started the game well and Danko Lazovic burst into the box, but he was denied by a superb challenge from Deniz Baris.
However, Fenerbahce hit back and Deivid flashed a right-foot shot just wide from the edge of the box.
Minutes later the visitors should have been ahead as Alex rounded Heurelho Gomes and cut the ball back for Deivid who failed to connect properly with the shot.
Fenerbahce were taking control of the game and Semih Senturk wasted another good opportunity to put them ahead when he was found by Gokhan Gonul at the near post but his header was poor.
Just as they were beginning to dominate, Fenerbahce were dealt a blow when the influential Alex limped off to be replaced by Ali Bilgin.
Tackles were flying in from both sets of players and Addo was lucky not to be sent off for spitting at Semih, but referee Howard Webb did not see the incident.
Neither side were finding the necessary quality in the final third and in first half injury time Kenneth Perez's free-kick almost bobbled through to Addo.
The frustration of both sides boiled over again just before the half-time whistle with Diego Lugano get booked for squaring up to Lazovic and Deniz lucky to stay on the pitch for stamping on Jan Kromkamp.
Fenerbahce came flying out the traps after the restart and Mehmet Aurelio fired wide from the edge of the penalty area.
They were almost in front soon after when Bilgin's curling shot was fumbled by the erratic Gomes into the path of Semih, but Addo got a crucial touch.
PSV should have made Fenerbahce pay for their profligacy when substitute Danny Koevermans broke down the right and cross for Perez who somehow managed to head wide with the goal gaping.
The pendulum then swung further in PSV's favour when Deivid's tackle on Zonneveld saw him dismissed by Webb.
Ronald Koeman's side immediately set about making the numerical advantage count, but once again a lack of quality in the final ball prevented them from taking the lead.
Fenerbahce were struggling to cope with Koevermans' physical presence and he was unlucky not to put PSV in front when his header from Kromkamp's cross went narrowly wide.
With eight minutes remaining, Roberto Carlos fired in a warning shot to PSV as his left-foot drive went straight into the arms of Gomes.
However, neither side managed to find the breakthrough as Fenerbahce slipped to second in Group G behind Inter Milan.
