EXCLUSIVE: Liam Reddy has signed a new three year deal at Queensland Roar as he bids to help Frank Farina’s men go one better this season.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper had been linked with a possible switch to Perth Glory but the son of rugby league legend Rod Reddy insists there was never any danger of him swapping Suncorp for Members Equity Stadium.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com today: “I’m really happy to have agreed a new deal at the club and I’m looking forward to next season. We got so close to the grand final and now we’re all back (in training) and determined to push hard next year.”
Reddy insists the delay in signing was not due to anyone dragging their feet and that his first choice was always to stay put at Suncorp.
He said: “First I went on holidays and then Frank Farina and Lawrence Oudendyk went off to Brazil (on a scouting trip) but I’m glad it’s all sorted now.
“There’s a good bunch here and I think that’s important when you’re committing yourself to something.”
Reddy, who holds the Hyundai A-League record of 14 clean sheets in a season, accepts that a new deal doesn’t mean automatic selection.
During his absence through injury last year, understudy Griffin McMaster came into the team and performed well. He was promptly rewarded with a two-year contract of his own.
Reddy said: “Griffin did well and I’m sure he’ll be anxious to play as well.”
Still on the issue of goalkeepers Reddy has expressed his support for fellow custodian Danny Vukovic now that the grand final slapping saga finally appears to be over.
He said: “I think common sense has prevailed in the end.
"No-one disputes what he did was wrong and he has been punished but I’m pleased he’ll be able to go to the Olympics. He’s played in all the qualifiers and I’m sure Graham Arnold will be very happy that he’s able to pick him.
“I’m sure the Olyroos will have plenty of 11 versus 11 practice games to try and help Danny with that match sharpness and to create a match situation for him.”
