ROAR goalkeeper Liam Reddy has continued his rapid recovery from the ankle sprain that threatened his 100% appearance record this season.
He is said to be a good chance to take his place in the Queensland side to face Wellington Phoenix this Sunday at Suncorp Stadium.
The big custodian trained with coach Fernando vaz Alves this morning and despite obvious soreness the 26-year-old says he’s determined to pull on the gloves against the Kiwis.
“I think I’ll be right to play; I’ve been getting physio twice-a-day and icing it non-stop. I pulled through well today so will hopefully it’ll keep improving right up to Sunday,” Reddy said.
“I’m feeling confident and the medical staff think I’ll be alright if I continue to do the right things, so I don’t think it will be a problem,” he added.
Physio Tony Ganter revealed more on the lengths Reddy had to go to this week in order to reach this point in his recovery.
“Barring an adverse reaction to his training session today he should be there or thereabouts for Sunday. We’ve been giving him two sessions a day in the physio room and during the night he’s been packing his ankle in potato pulp to draw more fluid out of it,” Ganter said.
He continued: “Every two hours during the night he’s woken up and stretched the ankle to ensure it doesn’t stiffen up. Then he’s had to change the dressings before going back to sleep again and repeating the process in another two hours time.
“Considering the injury he sustained and the length of time we’ve had to deal with it, his recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. It’s still a bit swollen and doesn’t look very good, but it doesn’t matter how it looks as long as it works!”
Coach Frank Farina is likely to stick with the side that took the points in Adelaide last week but returning Brazilian midfielder Marcinho, who missed last week with a hamstring injury, could come into contention for a starting berth.
Roar currently lie in fourth place on the Hyundai A-League ladder and will consolidate their position in the finals places with a win against the Phoenix, but Coach Farina says he’s unconcerned with ladder position at this stage of the season.
“I’m not really focusing on that; if we get three points, that’s crucial. The league is going to be tight all the way to the end, so it’s just a matter of accumulating points and if we can do that I’ll be happy irrespective of where we are on the table at the moment,” Farina said.
Danny Tiatto is still not fit enough to make his comeback this week, but is a hot favourite to be in the starting line-up against Melbourne Victory next Friday night.
