Former Socceroo Nick Rizzo, 27, has revealed he'd consider returning to Australia and playing in the A-League.
The left-footed midfielder, currently on loan at English League One side Chesterfield from MK Dons, says he’s been impressed with the league as he weighs his options up for next season.
“My plans after this loan are still undecided,” he tells www.au.fourfourtwo.com from England.
“There are options here in England. However, the success of the A-league has made me seriously consider coming back home and playing,” says Rizzo, who’s been playing in Europe for 10 years.
“It seems to be a good national league now so I'm going to have a decision on my hands,” adds Rizzo, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
“Also I would like to force my way back into the national setup and I think playing in the A-League could increase my chances. Yes playing in the A-League does appeal to me."
Sydneysider Rizzo is a former Liverpool fringe player in the mid-late 90s who made the first team bench under then coach Roy Evans.
However, a desire to play regularly in the first team saw him make a big money move to then-Socceroo boss Terry Venables' Crystal Palace in 1998. He played at Selhurst Park for two seasons, with 42 appearances and four goals to his name.
After Palace experienced severe financial difficulties, Rizzo moved to Italy where he had four seasons for lower tier clubs Ternana, Ancona and Prato. Injury cruelled much of his time in Italy before he moved back to the UK – on Venables’ recommendation – to MK Dons in 2005.
Rizzo played for Australia against Croatia in 1998 in Venables’ final game in charge of the Socceroos. He was also part of the Olyroos’ Sydney 2000 campaign.
